Dusk blanketed the sky. The snow drizzled down as my car steadily handled the switchback curves. “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”, by Robert Frost, came to mind. Those seconds were surreal and vibrantly real simultaneously. I found a safe pull-off and sat there for a moment.
The poem by Robert Frost echoes a literal stopping by the woods, but also something deeper. The poem is symbolic of the peace of death and the knowing that the journey is long. The poem portrayed a person who had come a long way but had a long way to go.
I laughed and said to myself, "Okay, God, I hear you." It was as if God said, “Do not stop, slow down, or get lazy. You are not done. You are halfway there. Keep moving."
In December of 2026, I will officially consider myself to be a “middle-aged” person. Mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually, I have come a long way. And, I still have a long way to go. It would be easy at this point in life to say, "This is it.", and cruise through until the end. That is not God's way. As long as we have breath, we have purpose. I appreciate the thoughtful way God took time to speak to me on a snowy evening.
